Land & Sea – Michael Kelly and Kyle Evans

June 14 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Michael Kelly
In 1985 there was a recession raging in Oregon. There were no jobs here and to Long Beach, CA I went, God help us all.
While there, I would make my way to the beaches that were near by. There was the Pacific Ocean, of course, and a good number of sailboats every day. Their image, floating peacefully on the ocean, was initially a soothing respite from the intensity of the LA area. It was an escape from somewhere that I did not want to be. The sail boat on the water represented “going away”.
The sailboat then became the subject of drawing compositions. They were shapes on the water and shapes in the weather. Sailboats were no longer a source of relaxation, or, escape. They became intense focuses of study. The more I looked, the more I saw.
This group is 8 from approximately 40 studies. They were done on location and not embellished later.

I’ve always been drawn to landscapes. Maybe because I’ve seen so many that are so big, sweeping and awe inspiring. I think it’s a blessing to live in the Western part of the country where we can still see these big vistas, but I also appreciate the richness hidden in the nuance. The way a particular leaf turns or the expression of color. And yes, sometimes I indulge in a bit of whimsy, but what would life be without it?
